Problem
As part of the requirement for prospective teachers to complete their studies, they must be immersed in the school environment for at least twelve weeks. In recent times the feedback from at least 25% of the schools assigned indicated that the student-teachers exhibit poor professionalism. The primary cause is the lack of knowledge and skills required to meet the schools’ established standards. As a consequence of this, schools have become more reluctant to take in student-teachers for their internship. This has created issues for student-teachers graduating from tertiary institutions.
Solution
I recommended a blended approach. Students can complete a portion of the project at their own pace and, for the other part, engage in real-time interactions, increasing their motivation and improving social skills. The e-learning portion will focus more on the relationship between student-teachers and their adult counterparts. Student-teachers will use scenarios to make decisions and will also be aware of the consequence of those decisions. The in-person portion will focus on management skills and preparation for the classroom environment.
Roles and Responsibilities
My responsibilities were to design and create a project to address the issue of student-teacher professionalism. This involved meetings with principals, teachers, and other key stakeholders to establish the goal, what people need to do, and why they are not doing it. Contributions from SMEs and others helped to generate the action map shown below. A project plan and timeline were established to guide the completion of the project.
Action Map
Further meetings were held with Subject Matter Experts to decide on the content. An instructional design document for the entire project was prepared for review and discussion. Once the instructional design document was approved, a visual storyboard of the project was created.
